District Spelling Bees

The Spelling Bee is an educational competition that supports and recognizes achievement in Spelling. The purpose of the Bee is to encourage students to improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. It also helps children develop self-confidence, communication and public speaking skills, and the ability to thrive under pressure.
The Consolidated School District of New Britain has offered a spelling bee competition for grades 4-8 annually for over 15 years. The competition takes place on three levels: classroom, school and district. Students must be one of the top spellers in their classroom to compete on the school level. The winner(s) of each grade at the School Spelling Bee then proceed to represent their grade and school at the district level competition. At each level, students are asked to spell a broad selection of words with increasing degrees of difficulty. Winners of the Spelling Bee receive awards and recognition for participation in the competition.
The district championships for this year’s Elementary Spelling Bee was Tuesday, April 9th at Smith School. The Middle School Bee was held on Wednesday, April 10th at Slade School auditorium. Congratulations to all who participated!
