The Academy

of Public Service

Overview

The goal of New Britain High’s Public Service Academy is to help students discover an array of careers in the public service industry. Through our two pathways, inspired students have many opportunities to work with children, shadow educators, visit area schools and learn what it is like to work in public safety.   Careers in the public service field include but are not limited to educator, case management worker, social worker, child advocate, mental health counselor, community economic developer, speech/language pathologist, community treatment specialist, emergency management specialist, and many more. Our goal is to allow students to explore, research, and in some cases, try these career paths in order to figure out what might be a truly fulfilling career.

At New Britain High we currently offer two pathways within the academy: The Early Childhood Education Pathway and The Secondary Education Pathway.  Both of these pathways consist of consecutive classes and a choice of three college-articulated courses. Students can participate in work-based learning experiences including Little Cane’s Preschool and elementary school placements.  Students in both of these pathways also visit college campuses around Connecticut and sit in on many panels that represent educational careers, NBHS alumni and community members.  Students can leave New Britain High with nine college credits from three different colleges (Tunxis, Central Connecticut State University and UCONN). In addition, steps are in place for our students to study and then take the ParaPro exam and graduate being prepared and certified to be a paraeducator.

New Britain High School is  currently  building a Public Safety Pathway. Through partnerships with the New Britain Police Department, New Britain Fire Department and EMT Services students are able to garner hands-on experience.  Students listen to guest lecturers, visit all three departments on field experiences and get the chance to handle technical equipment (such as fire truck equipment, ambulatory materials and police safety instruments).  This semester-long class is in its third year of development and growing every year.
