Roosevelt Middle School, named after
President
Theodore Roosevelt, is located in the East End of New Britain,
Connecticut, a
culturally diverse community. Once the Hardware
City of the World, New Britain now
depends on city government,
small business, and service industries for its economic base. Major
employers
include New Britain General Hospital and Central Connecticut
State University.
The School opened in 1993
on the same
site occupied by Roosevelt
School from
1926 through
1988. Carved relief and graduation photos from the former building
grace a
hallway of the present building which was designed to facilitate the
middle
school model. Care academic classrooms are clustered for team teaching.
Each
classroom is equipped with a closed circuit television which functions
a s a
room clock and a controlled message boards. The television is a slo the
medium
for live on-site broadcasts and for video viewing through control room.
All
classrooms have at least one computer and are wired for access tot he
internet.
To supplement classroom
instruction,
there are three computer labs. One is dedicated to Read 180, a program
designed
to improve student reading skills. Another is dedicated to RiverDeep, a
program
for improving math skills. The other is a resource lab for staff to use
with
their classes. Instruction is available in word processing, the use of
software
programs, the application and use of technology, and the navigation of
Internet
search engines.
A large satellite dish on
our roof
provides access to a variety of educational broadcasts for any room.
There is
also cable television access throughout our control room. The Media Center
features an automated catalog system and research portals with access
to
information networks and the Internet.
Character Counts!, a
program to promote
positive character, is integral to our mission. Students are able to
demonstrate character and commitment to our community through
collecting food
and clothing for area organizations, tutoring elementary students, and
sharing
activities with senior citizens as well as through their interactions
with each
other and with staff. A ropes course installed in our gym is used to
encourage
self-esteem and cooperative problem solving.
Parent and community
involvement are
encouraged at all levels as we journey towards excellence.
Roosevelt Middle School is an active member
of the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS).
