Holmes Elementary
School

Stanley Holmes Elementary School has benefited from district wide
building initiatives. Holmes has 29 classrooms with facilities for a full range
of support services, special subject programs, a media center and computer room
with Internet capabilities, a large fixed seat auditorium and a cafeteria. The
grounds have been refurbished and revitalized. Entering the facility is truly
an aesthetic delight!
The staff has participated in
school-based, district and state training. Teachers continue to support student
growth in math problem solving. Our Art/Writing program continues to expand,
and continually modified Performance Based Tasks and Assessments provide
students with material to be added to their portfolios. Holmes School staff have
been trained in "Character
Counts" activities, the Early Intervention Project and as BEST support
teachers. Twenty-one staff members are eligible to take student teachers or to
serve the District as mentors. For the fifth year, Holmes has received a
$20,000 grant from Loctite Corporation to provide
resources and training. The staff is committed to the need to grow and learn,
providing our students with a variety of exciting and challenging learning
opportunities. Through the Holmes School Partnership with Central Connecticut State University, college
students serve the building in a variety of capacities. Students have assisted
as class tutors, interns, student teachers and instructors for after school
activities. CCSU classes have been conducted
at Holmes in which Holmes staff are frequently asked
to participate. Holmes staff is able and available to share their experiences.
With very active support from our
PTA, Student Council, Parent School Liaison and all of our parents, these
partnerships add to, and enhance, the already ambitious school direction. Our
science focus, supported through Loctite Corporation
of Rocky Hill, has sent students to Nature’s
Classroom, a multitude of trips to zoos, aquariums, nature centers, tidal
pond explorations, and science museums. Three Holmes School students attended the NASA Space Camp in Cape Canaveral, Florida, in June of 1999. All of the
students attend live theatre performances at the University of Hartford
and tour one of three local art museums each year. Holmes students lead
exciting and enriching lives in and out of the classroom. The "Holmes
School Attitude" is part of students’ lives.
We never quit, never give up, and always do our best.
