KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
UNDER WAY AT CITY SCHOOLS

Kindergarten Registration for the New Britain public schools will begin on February 25, 2008 for the next school year. Children must be age 5 on or before January 1, 2009 to register (birth date from January 2, 2002 through January 1, 2003). Registration packets with all the necessary forms are available at elementary schools and community preschools. Parents may register their child any day when schools are in session by stopping by the school office between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Parents are urged to register their child for kindergarten as early as possible between February 25 and June 1. Parents must provide the school office with proof of age (a birth certificate or baptismal record), the child's social security card, and proof of residency in New Britain in order to register for kindergarten.

Connecticut Law requires a medical examination and appropriate immunizations and tuberculin test for each pupil entering school. An examination performed by the family physician or pediatrician within the year prior to registration will be necessary. The tuberculin test must be done within one year of school entry, and no earlier than September 1, 2006. A tuberculin test is also acceptable if it was done for preschool enrollment. Forms for physicals are available at the elementary schools and in the registration packet.

On Saturday, March 15, the District will host a “Kindergarten Kick-Off” from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Lincoln School , for the families of all incoming kindergarteners. The “Kindergarten Kick-Off” will include an informational session for parents about registration, the kindergarten program, and the DiLoreto Dual Language magnet school lottery. Assistance with completing registration forms will be available, and all information will be provided in both English and Spanish. There will be a “Preview of Kindergarten” with activities for incoming kindergarteners led by kindergarten teachers. Siblings ages 3-12 may participate in fun activities in the gym, provided by the New Britain Parks and Recreation Department.

In late August, each school will host a Kindergarten Orientation to welcome new kindergarteners and their parents. Parents and children will meet their child's kindergarten teacher and the principal, visit the classroom, and learn about the school. The Kindergarten Orientation sessions will be as follows:
